The Planning and Development Department secures capital funding from a variety of different state, federal, local and private sources for both the revitalization of the 2700 public housing apartments in the City of Cambridge as well as for the development of new affordable housing opportunities.
Annually, the Department is responsible for more than $5 - $8 million in overall capital improvements, with an emphasis on long-term durability, livability, energy efficiency and high quality construction. In addition, planning for all capital work in occupied buildings includes extensive resident involvement; from input on the selection of architects and materials to phasing and relocation plans. Over the past eight years, more than $57 million in capital work has been completed, including the addition of 200 new affordable apartments city-wide.
