Congratulations to the
Work Force Class of 2012!

The Cambridge Housing Authority (CHA) congratulates the Work Force Program Senior Class of 2012. The twenty-three Work Force students plan to attend colleges throughout the Northeast, including Bentley, Howard, and UMass-Dartmouth, this coming Fall. Four students were awarded Work Force Scholarships at the Senior Banquet held on May 10, 2012. Changes to the Front Desk

CHA is implementing changes to improve service at our front desk. In June, we welcomed Sandra Figueira (left) to the Leased Housing team. Sandra joins Albertina Fernandes (right), who was also promoted to Leasing Officer I at the front desk.

Summer Schedule

From May 29th to August 31st CHA will be operating under a 'Summer Hours' schedule. * The schedule is as follows:

Monday: 8:30 am - 6:00 pm
Tuesday: 8:30 am - 6:00 pm
Wednesday: 8:30 am - 6:00 pm
Thursday: 8:30 am - 6:00 pm
Friday: 8:30 am - 12:00 pm
*These hours are also in effect for the CHA switchboard

 

Housing Choice Voucher Participants
Leasing-up Outside of Cambridge

In June 2011, CHA worked with a Rappaport Fellow from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to map trends of where Housing Choice Voucher (HCV Program Participants are leasing apartments. CHA provided anonymous address information for all households in the voucher program between 2004 and 2009, and this information was used to chart where voucher holders are living, and document any moves that were made.

The results showed some interesting patterns over the five-year period, including a reduction in the percentage of participants living within Cambridge city limits. In 2004, 93% of CHA voucher holders were living in Cambridge, but that number steadily declined and by 2008, only 77% were living in Cambridge. CHA plans to use this data as a catalyst to further examine the factors influencing HCV families and individuals choices on where to lease up. Eventually, the agency will gain a better understanding of how rental rates, access to services, and proximity to employment, schools, and transit influence these decisions. Applicants Wanted!

CHA is currently accepting applications for Lyndon B. Johnson Apartments. Located at 150 Erie Street, just outside of Central Square, L.B. Johnson Apartments is a 177-unit elderly/disabled building which has undergone a complete modernization over the past 2 years. The newly renovated studio and 1-bedroom units feature central air, all-new flooring, cabinets, Energy Star appliances, and a fully renovated common area, as well as a shared outdoor community space. Cambridge Affordable Rental &
First-Time Homebuyer Opportunities

Affordable Rental Opportunities: The Cambridge Community Development Department (CDD) is currently accepting applications for the City's Inclusionary Housing Rental Program. The CDD anticipated 100+ units coming online in the next 18 months. Inclusionary Rental apartments are in properties throughout the City, with rents determined based on family income. Section 8 vouchers holders are encouraged to apply and are no subject to minimum income requirements. First-Time Homebuyer Opportunity: The Community Development Department is also accepting applications for two 2-bedroom condo units at 61-69 Bolton Street (North Cambridge). The units are approximately 1,120 square feet and feature 2 bedrooms + study, 2 baths, 10' ceilings, maple floors, hardwood cabinets, Fridgeaire Pro stainless steel appliances, granite counter tops and balconies. Each unit has central air, parking and in-unit laundry hook-ups. These units will be sold to income eligible applications at the affordable price of $219,000. The deadline for completed applications is Monday August 6, 2012.
